Rules And
Regulations For Using The Professional Identification Seal
USE
OF THE PROFESSIONAL IDENTIFICATION SEAL
Use
of the professional seal is protected under The Saskatchewan
Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (SASTT)
Regulatory Bylaws. The rubber professional seal can be used
only by Applied Science Technologists and Certified
Technicians who are in good standing with SASTT, and have
accumulated a minimum of three consecutive years of technical
experience after receiving their professional status. Evidence
of the additional three years of technical experience will be
based on the actual date of registration and a statutory
declaration. The right to use the professional seal is a
privilege granted by SASTT. The privilege can be removed if
the seal is not used in an ethical or professional manner.
LIABILITY
INSURANCE
SASTT
members are responsible for obtaining appropriate and adequate liability
insurance. The member must clearly recognize that the affixing of any
mark or device to work is generally perceived by the public to carry an added
measure of guarantee and certainty. Therefore, it is recommended, that
the member possess adequate professional liability insurance as an integral
component of using the professional seal.
APPLICATION
OF THE PROFESSIONAL IDENTIFICATION SEAL
The
professional identification seal should be applied in black ink in a clear and
legible manner. The professional seal may be used on any preliminary, draft or
final drawing / document which has been prepared by the member or prepared
under the immediate supervision of the member, which directly relates to the
member's discipline and level of registration with the Association, and falls
within the member's personal area(s) and limits of applied science expertise.
The normal signature of the member should be clearly shown in the space
provided. The use of initials without surname is not recommended. The date of
application should be noted.
PROFESSIONAL
RESPONSIBILITY
The onus is
always on the member to ensure that his / her application of the professional
seal is done in a legal, ethical, and professional manner. It is the
responsibility of the member to be aware of any legal limitations or
requirements on the use of the professional seal. The Association will assist
by providing general guidelines as necessary.
DOCUMENTS
REQUIRING THE PROFESSIONAL IDENTIFICATION SEAL
In general,
the professional seal may be affixed on documents which:
a)
transfer technical information, or
b) have a
technical impact on a third party, or
c) have
been specifically requested by a client or an authority having jurisdiction.
As a
guideline the following documents may require a professional seal:

and final technical drawings

and final reports
(preliminary reports and drawings should be clearly marked with a
statement to note their preliminary nature)

Lab
analyses
-
Maps
-
Specifications
-
Design
and field notes
-
Official
field notes
-
Official
estimates
-
Plans
-
Appraisals
-
Permits
-
Any
miscellaneous legal documents
Letters
would not come under this category unless used as a report.
In some
instances, the industry practice is to seal original drawings. In other
instances, only copies are sealed. The member should be aware of the accepted
practice in his or her area.

The
professional identification seal is available only through the SASTT office.
