The SASTT Code of Ethics
1.
Relationship to Public:
An Association member
shall:
- have proper regard for
the physical environment and the safety, health and well-being of the
public in the execution of his/her duties as a member;
- engage in
encouragement, guidance and technical education of students and to
generally enhance public understanding and regard for his/her profession
by public service, public education and example;
- avoid any association
with or acceptance of advertising which is misleading or in any manner
injurious to the public or to the dignity of his/her profession. A
member may employ the advertising media to announce his/her practice and
availability which shall be limited to statements of fact. Advertising
employed by members shall not in any way discredit or attempt to
discredit another member, specifically or by implication;
- the member's duty to
the public shall always be the member's paramount obligation.
2.
Relationship with Employer and Client:
An Association member:
- shall protect to the
fullest extent possible, the interests of the employer and client which
are consistent with the welfare of the public and the member's personal
integrity;
- shall serve his/her
employer or client in a conscientious, diligent, efficient and competent
manner;
- shall advise an
employer or client of any adverse consequences which may result if the
member's technical decisions are not followed;
- will offer or disclose
to an employer or client, or prospective employer or client, the
existence of any interest which the member holds in an enterprise which
may result in or be interpreted as being in conflict with the interest
of the employer or client;
- will not use directly
or indirectly any employer's or client's confidential information in any
way which is competitive, adverse or detrimental to the interest of the
employer or client;
- retained by the client
or employer will not accept without the consent of the client or
employer an assignment or project by another if the two in any way
conflict or could be perceived as conflicting;
- act in all matters for
each employer or client faithfully and diligently and shall regard as
confidential any information obtained by him/her as to the business
affairs, expertise, technical methods or processes of an employer or
client and will not divulge any information given in confidence;
- will not misrepresent
his or her qualifications, experience or abilities;
- will have no interest,
direct or indirect, in any materials, supplies or equipment used by
his/her employer or client, nor in any firms receiving contracts from
his/her employer or client unless his/her interest has been fully
disclosed.
3.
Relationship of Members to Each Other:
An Association member:
- will not knowingly
attempt to injure the reputation or business of another member;
- will conduct
him/herself toward other members with courtesy and good faith;
- will endeavor to
co-operate with fellow members, give appropriate credit for
technological work, uphold the principle of adequate compensation for
technological work, provide opportunity for the professional development
and advancement of his/her associates and subordinates and broaden the
effectiveness of the profession through the interchange of technological
information and experience;
- will not accept or pay
a commission in order to secure work in his/her profession;
- maintain the honor and
integrity of the profession and without fear or favor, expose before the
proper tribunal, unethical, unprofessional, incompetent or dishonest
conduct by any other member of the profession;
- not express publicly or
while serving as a witness before a Court, commission or other tribunal,
opinions on technical matters that are not founded on adequate knowledge
and preparation;
- sign and approve only
those plans, specifications and reports actually made by him/her or
under his/her personal supervision and direction.
4.
Duty to Oneself:
An Association member
shall:
- always act in a
responsible manner and utilize fair and equitable business practices in
dealing with colleagues, clients and associates;
- undertake assignments
only when competent by virtue of training and experience and where
warranted, engage or advise the engagement of specialists required to
competently and diligently complete assignments;
- strive to maintain his
or her proficiency by updating technical knowledge and skills required
to practice applied science/engineering technology in a competent
fashion.
5.
Duty of Members of the Association:
An Association member
shall:
- uphold these standards
of ethics in precept and by example and shall encourage all other
members to conduct themselves in the practice of their profession
through adherence to and respect of these standards;
- refrain from making
unjustified statements and from performing unethical acts including
those which would discredit the Association or any of its members;
- the observance of this
Code of Ethics shall be a condition of membership in the Association.
