WHAT IS AN APPLIED SCIENCE TECHNOLOGIST?

The Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) is a professional who assumes and exercises independent judgment to develop and manage technology. This is achieved by the accumulation of academic training and related experience in the application of known principles of sciences and mathematics. The registered technologist is a graduate of a recognized technology diploma program (typically two or three years duration) or equivalent, and who has completed two or more years of progressive experience in an area of work directly related to the program and who has received favorable supervisory references.

The registered technologist studied a curriculum based on a core of applied sciences which are used in solving technical problems or managing technology. The curriculum includes the fundamentals of applied science or engineering technology applicable to a particular discipline or specialty of technology. Academic and theoretical portions of the technical curriculum is reinforced by laboratory experiments and exercises, and field work.

The registered technologist may carry out a wide range of complex analytical work either independently or under general direction. Typical activities include design, production, marketing, testing, quality control, estimation, surveying, inspection, diagnostic evaluation, supervision, management, technical sales and teaching. Such activities may be carried out in association with other professionals.

The certified technologist uses an applied approach based on a comprehensive understanding of a specific technology. The technologist evaluates assignments, determines procedures and implements solutions, schedules work to meet objectives, participates in short and long-range planning and may become involved in developing and promoting conceptual change.

Technologists may assume managerial or administrative responsibility for a wide range of technical endeavors. The technologist may supervise and coordinate a diverse working group and train less experienced professional staff.

The certified technician uses a practical approach in solving technical problems based upon a detailed understanding of standard methods and techniques. The technician works under general supervision. Typical activities include testing, trouble-shooting, inspection, calibration, design drafting, quality control, maintenance, modeling, data compilation estimation, sales, surveying, and field supervision.

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION STUDENTS

BENEFIT TO EMPLOYERS

There are indicators that a serious shortage of skilled, well-trained technical workers will occur in the near future.  It is a concern among many employers that this shortage will worsen.  There are many varied reasons for this shortage, some long term in the making and some as a result of the recent turn-around in the economy.  What steps can employers take to protect themselves against this serious manpower shortage?

A positive step that can provide a quick return on investment is the addition of Co-operative Education Students to your labor force.  Students represent the labor force of tomorrow and the sooner employers tap into this developing labor pool, the sooner they can begin to resolve today's and tomorrow's manpower shortages.

The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) Palliser Campus, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan has been offering Business and Engineering Technology programs in the Co-operative Education format since 1984.  Co-operative Education as defined at Palliser, "integrates classroom theory with related on the job experience by alternating periods of academic study and paid employment".

The Co-operative Education Staff at SIAST Palliser Campus develop job opportunities that are related to the Co-op Students Programs.   For example, Accounting students may be employed by CA firms, Electronics students by computer service departments, Electrical Engineering students by power utility companies; Instrument Engineering students by refineries, etc.  Our students have been employed in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ottawa, Montreal, and Yellow Knife.  Students recently employed by a Saskatoon based employer spent the majority of their time in the U.S.  Palliser students are certainly willing to travel.

Perhaps you can see as an opportunity in your company to take advantage of the Co-operative Education Program.  The primary benefit for students in the program is experience, but Co-operative Education is also designed to assist employers as well:  staff on temporary leave; special projects that require extra help; entry level positions that can be filled by students on a temporary basis; evaluating students for permanent positions.

Some comments received from past employers of co-operative Education students are:  strong initiative; good dedication to resolve technical problems; very capable of performing assigned tasks; takes on any task and runs with it to completion; very little guidance required.

Co-operative Education offered through our Engineering Technology Division are:  Architecture & Building, Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Geomatics, CAD, Electrical, Electronics, Computer & Instrumentation.

Co-operative Education students are available on a year-round basis.
